LEARNING EXPERIENCES - THEMES

Queen Kaahumanu School's English Language Learners (ELL) Program continually seeks ways to provide learning experiences for ELL students. This has been (and currently is) done through the inclusion of research-based instructional philosophies, materials, and methods.

At the start of each school year, the essential question, "How can ESL students be provided with opportunities to learn content knowledge/concepts and strategies while they are learning English language skills?" is asked.

To address this question, learning experiences are designed to incorporate subject area content and/or concepts (scaffolded to the students’ English language proficiency levels so as to be comprehensible) along with learning strategies into lessons focusing on English language skills development.

The learning experiences are provided through theme-based instruction. Every year, a new theme is featured. The theme focuses on the language communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and understanding, in addition to higher level thinking skills and learning strategies. Appropriate grade level academic content knowledge and skills which are relevant to young students learning English are also incorporated.

How would you survive if you lived in this community? This is the underlying question in the theme, "Communities: Past, Present, Future". In this theme, you will explore how communities have changed over time and are still changing. You will be practicing the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and understanding while being provided academic content awareness through the study of different communities of the past, present, and future. You will simulate experiences of knights, nobles, and peasants living in Medieval Europe; then inhabitants living in the South American rain forests; and then astronauts exploring space. As you go through these simulations, see if you can answer the question, "How would you survive?"

You will be participating in learning experiences involving the integration of language and content knowledge and skills. 

You will become world explorers who use learning strategies as you move toward the attainment of benchmarks under English language proficiency, Language Arts, and content area standards.

This school year, you will embark on a journey that will take you to different periods in time. 

You will become museum curators who travel through time to learn how knowing the past lets us understand the present and plan for the future.

You will use language skills and strategies to conduct research, create exhibits, and present your findings.
